I was wondering why our politicians didn’t put self-serve gas to the voters this year, (“Bill to let Oregon drivers pump their own gas passes House,” March 20). I have lived in Oregon since 1980. We voted on self-serve gas in 1982 and it failed. Perhaps we aren’t voting for it this time because they are scared that it would fail again.
Oregon voters should have the right to decide for ourselves if we want self-serve gas. I’m against it for many reasons. Too bad I can’t be a mouse to see just how many people pump their gas during one of our storms with rain blowing sideways in bitter cold.
I guess everyone thinks it’s a done deal and no one wants to go against it, even if they don’t like the idea. Democrats and Republicans think they can slip it through the Senate and the House fast before anyone hears about it, and it will pass before the voters can do anything.
I always liked that Oregon’s people wanted to be different. Don’t fix what’s not broken. Just because other states have gone to self-serve doesn’t mean we have to fall off the cliff with them.
