I watched the evening TV news a few days ago and was struck by an image that has sadly become familiar to all of us.
She walked past the six portraits hung side by side on the fence. She stopped at each one and looked into their faces. Three who worked at that school, in the presence of all that promise. Three children, age nine, their small bodies mutilated by rifle bullets. Their promise extinguished. That school in Nashville forever tainted by their blood.
She stopped to kneel and place flowers, gently touching the face of a child. She has been a teacher most of her life and is a mother and grandmother.
I saw deep sadness on her face.
“Thoughts and prayers.” “Flags at half-staff.” “Nothing can be done,” some say.
Is this life in America?
She is the First Lady, placing flowers.
