The NCAA lifted the limit on the number of schools recruits can take official visits and while the change could prove advantageous to Oregon, the schools are still limited in how many recruits they can host on the expense paid trips.
The NCAA Division I Council announced it approved lifting the limit on official visits recruits can take — currently five — though they can still only take an official visit once per school, unless there is a head coaching change after the player’s first visit, in which case they can take a second. The change is effective July 1.
What didn’t change though — at least not yet — are the limits each team has on the number of official visits its can provide in a year, which is 56 in the case of football.
Oregon coach Dan Lanning would support the NCAA lifting the institutional limits on official visits as well, with recruits still held to one official visit per school. Then it would be a matter of judgement, budget constraints and strategy as to whether to host a recruit for an official visit if they’ve already taken a lot elsewhere.
“It’s great to be able to get guys on campus, but if you’re one of 10 visits, what’s the likelihood of you getting them, is 10%,” Lanning said. “We can’t bat at 10% when we bring people on an official visit. If we’re still going to be limited in the number of official visits we can actually have on campus I don’t think that necessarily means that we change (our approach). We do a good job of using the ones that we have, but I’m not interested in practicing recruiting, bringing people because they want to come out here. We bring people that are interested in being Ducks.”
Men’s basketball teams are limited to 28 official visits on a rolling two-year period and women’s basketball teams are limited to 24 official visits also over a rolling two-year period. Baseball can host 25 official visits per year.
