This is the skin of a spin-off, Bella – or possibly a reboot.
“Twilight” is getting the TV treatment from Lionsgate Television, so a whole new era of tweens can plant their flag for Team Jacob or Team Edward. (This author is firmly Team Bella Should Have Left Them Both, for the record.)
That is, of course, if the series is a reboot at all. It’s unclear whether the show will follow the original “Twilight” saga or if it will be some sort of spin-off.
In the past, author Stephanie Meyer has spoken about unpublished works, which spawned fan theories that these alleged books will tell the life of Renesmee, the half-vampire half-human child of Bella Cullen, nee Swan, and Edward Cullen. It’s rumored to follow her romance with her mother’s once-was best friend and current werewolf Jacob Black.
There was also a companion book with illustrations and elaborate backstories of characters that was released called “The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide.” It covered backstories not shoehorned into the books or movies, creating a veritable playground of content that Meyer could jump back into.
The Hollywood Reporter said in an exclusive that Sinead Daly is attached to write the script for the upcoming “Twilight” project. There is no network of platform that controls the rights to the franchise and no potential timeline for any network or franchise interested in them.
Lionsgate has both “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games,” another popular young adult series, to thank for a lot of money, to be frank. In 2017, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said, “There are a lot more stories to be told, and we’re ready to tell them when our creators are ready to tell those stories,” in reference to both young adult franchises.
But “Twilight” holds a special place in the heart of the Pacific Northwest. Love it or hate it, that’s up to you, but it was a cultural phenomenon and some of it was shot in both Oregon and Washington.
At the beginning of the series, Bella Swan moves to the small rainy town of Forks, Washington. But her home in the film, now an Airbnb open to fans, is located in St. Helens, Oregon.
The Cullens’ sleek glass mansion, in fact the very room where Edward jumped out of his window and told Bella, “Hold on, spider monkey,” is located in Portland. Bella’s high school? It’s in Kalama, Washington. You can even go to Port Angeles, Washington, and visit Bella Italia, where you can get yourself mushroom ravioli and a coke just like Bella and Edward did on their first “date”. Date is in quotes because, for non-“Twilight” fans, Edward was stalking Bella convinced she was going to get into trouble.
Apologies, though, because the sparkling turn of the century-born vampire who would do anything to protect you isn’t included.
This isn’t the first young adult franchise to get a TV reboot and or spin-off. “Harry Potter,” despite the controversy surrounding its anti-trans author JK Rowling, will have a series on Max, the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming channel. Likewise, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” based on the series of young adult novels, was ordered for Disney+ in 2024.
