Multnomah County office of Transportation warned downtown area bridge users that the Broadway, Burnside, Morrison and Hawthorne bridges will be subject to more frequent bridge lifts beginning 7 a.m. Wednesday, May 17 due to high river levels.
The county will be staffing all the bridges all hours and days until water levels subside, which may be early next week. Drivers, bicyclists, pedestrians and bus riders should expect delays when ships are passing through the channel. Autos may avoid delays by using the Marquam or Fremont bridges.
When river levels are high, some types of watercraft that may not normally need a bridge to lift to sail along the Willamette may need extra clearance.
Heavy mountain snow melt due to increased temperatures has raised the levels of many rivers in the Pacific Northwest.
