A 68-year-old man convicted of manslaughter in 2007 and rape in 1991 died of unspecified causes while in the custody of Columbia River Correctional Institution in Northeast Portland, state officials said Thursday.
Bobby Donald Barnes was serving a nearly 20-year sentence for manslaughter in the 2006 death of 51-year-old Gary Douglas George in the Cully neighborhood of Portland, according to court records. Police said at the time they suspected Barnes had tried to burglarize George’s home. An autopsy found George died of blunt-force trauma to the head.
Barnes died at a local hospital, officials said. His earliest release date was August 2026.
Barnes also was convicted of raping a 15-year-old girl at knifepoint in her Southeast Portland home in 1991.
