The U.S. House Appropriations subcommittee proposes to completely cut funding for two peace-building programs run by the U.S. State Department: reconciliation and atrocity prevention. These programs have a proven track record for effectiveness. They are essential for our national security and are much more cost effective in providing international stability than military actions. Representative Lori Chavez-DeRemer has written to me that if legislation pertaining to peace building programs appears before the House floor, she will keep our shared concerns with global violence and human suffering in mind. But action is needed now to reverse these proposed draconian cuts. As national security is a bipartisan issue, I implore all my members of Congress, both senators and representatives, to increase funding for these effective peace-building programs.
