UK retailer Aldi saw its best ever Christmas, with strong sales of BWS and more than half a million new shoppers in its aisles.
The retailer saw sales rise 0.4% on last year – or 8.1% on the pre-pandemic Christmas of 2019, one of the few major supermarket to grow sales in December according to Kantar data released last week.
CEO of Aldi UK Giles Hurley said there was strong demand across its award-winning beers, wines and spirits, with English Sparkling Wine a particular “stand out”.
Shoppers also bought more than 5.5m bottles of champagne, sparkling wine and prosecco for Christmas and New Year celebrations, it noted.
“As the UK’s fastest growing supermarket in 2021, our premium Specially Selected range notched up its highest ever sales,” he added. “There’s no doubt that 2021 was a long and difficult year for lots of people, but our amazing colleagues stopped at nothing as they came together to deliver the Christmas that our customers deserved.”
Last year, the retailer announced it would create around 2,000 jobs in 2022 and boost investment to £1.3billion over the next two years, opening 100 new stores and distribution centres, as well as revamping some of its existing stores.
