NFL star quarterback Aaron Rodgers said Wednesday that “my intention” is to play for the New York Jets in 2023.
“I think since Friday, I made it clear that my intention was to play and my intention was to play for the New York Jets,” he said during an interview on the “Pat McAfee Show.”
Rodgers added adding that he isn’t the one holding up a potential trade between the Green Bay Packers and the Jets from happening. Rodgers said the Packers’ asking price for him and the details of restructuring his contract are still being worked out.
The Packers have made no secret of their willingness to trade Rodgers, who has been with the team during his entire 18-year career.
“I haven’t been holding anything up. It’s the compensation that the Packers are trying to get,” Rodgers said. “The Packers want to move on and have let me know that in so many words. They’ve let other people know that in direct words.”
Rodgers was “90% sure” he was ready to retire before he decided to take a “darkness retreat” in a facility located in Ashland, Oregon in February. When he emerged from the four-day retreat, “something changed” within the Packers organization about him remaining with the organization. Rodgers said it was clear to him the Packers were ready to move on and install fourth-year player Jordan Love as their new quarterback. Rodgers is prepared to move on as well.
