According to figures from data firm IRI, Aldi Champagne has surpassed Lanson, becoming second to only Möet & Chandon in terms of UK sales over the festive season.
Aldi’s Champagne surged into second place in sales among Champagne brands over the festive season.
For less than £14 a bottle, the supermarket’s Champagne has become a UK-wide success. The name is Veuve Monsigny, and it retails for just £13.99 per 75cl bottle.
Veuve Monsigny is made for Aldi by Philizot & Fils, the French producer helmed by husband and wife team Stéphane and Virginie Philizot. It is based in Champagne’s Marne Valley.
However, critics already had their eyes set on Veuve Monsigny, since it has won numerous awards, like the most recent bronze at the International Wine Challenge, where it was described as having a “floral palate, fresh with little development but beautiful balance and restraint.”
According to figures from the data firm IRI, Aldi Champagne has surpassed Lanson, one of the Champagne region’s biggest houses, making Veuve Monsigny second to only Möet & Chandon.
Julie Ashfield, Aldi’s managing director of buying, proudly said that the discounter’s Champagne was “up there with the best bubbles available”. It has become so popular, that it is no longer available online.
