After help from the public, Gresham police arrested a suspect on Thursday in an attempted sexual assault that happened in January at Pat Pfeifer Park.
The attempted sexual assault happened at about 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19. When police were unable to find the suspect after a search of the area, they asked for public help to find witnesses or video surveillance of the suspect in the area.
On Jan. 31, police released photos from video surveillance of a person of interest in the case and the public response helped detectives identify the person.
On Thursday, March 9, police arrested Angel Mendez Jr., 22 at 6:16 p.m. on suspicion of first-degree sex abuse, coercion, public indecency, harassment and an unrelated warrant.
“Our greatest public safety tool is the assistance we get from the public,” said Detective Kerbs, the lead investigator in the case.
