Brandin Cooks will be playing for a new team. Again. The Houston Texans traded Cooks to the Dallas Cowboys, the Cowboys announced Sunday.
The Texans received a fifth-round pick in 2023 and a sixth-round pick in 2024 in exchange for Cooks. The former Oregon State star will be playing for his fifth team during his 10 years in the NFL.
Cooks caught 57 passes for 699 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games last season, his third with the Texans. However, he had been vocal about his unhappiness about being in Houston after the Texans failed to trade him before the deadline during last season. Cooks said he wanted no part of the Texans’ rebuilding project after the franchise hired its third coach in the past three years and traded star quarterback Deshaun Watson to the Cleveland Browns last season.
The Cowboys were looking to acquire another receiver to add with CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup. The sticking point was Cooks’ $18 million guaranteed salary in 2023. Cooks restructured his contract where the Texans will pay $6 million and the Cowboys will pay the remaining $12 million, according to facilitate a trade, according to espn.com.
Cooks has been productive during his career. He has posted at least 1,000 receiving yards and five touchdown receptions in six of his first nine seasons.
Cooks is now tied the record (Eric Dickerson) for the most-traded player in NFL history. He has been traded four times in his career. The New Orleans Saints traded him to the New England Patriots in 2017. The Patriots traded him to the Los Angeles Rams in 2018. The Rams traded him to the Texans in 2020.
