All eyes were on Karsten Warholm and Rai Benjamin in the final of the men’s 400-meter hurdles at the World Athletics Championships Tuesday night at Hayward Field.
Brazil’s Alison Dos Santos stunned Warholm, the defending Olympic champion and Benjamin, and won the race in a time of 46.29 seconds, a championship record. Dos Santos is the first athlete from Brazil to win a gold medal in World Championship competition.
Athletes representing the United States took the second and third in the race. Benjamin, who finished second in the 2020 Summer Olympics, took second in a time of 46.89 seconds and Trevor Bassitt finished a surprising third in a time of 47.39 seconds.
Warholm faded badly and finished seventh.
