A 72-year-old woman is in critical condition after being struck by a car Thursday evening while she was crossing a street near Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office says.
A nurse rushed to the woman and provided emergency care. The woman was taken to a nearby trauma center.
The driver involved in the crash sped away from the scene, and the car, a 2015 Subaru Legacy, was later found parked in a nearby residential neighborhood, the sheriff’s office says. The initial investigation indicates the driver ran a red light and hit the woman “as she crossed SW Barnes Road in a crosswalk” at 7:22 p.m.
Portland has seen a rash of hit-and-run-type incidents recently, including two fatal such crashes in 24 hours last month.
Investigators ask anyone who witnessed the crash near St. Vincent’s, or who might have information about it, to call the sheriff’s office at 503-629-0111.
