Adrien Bennings wears a thick class ring on her right hand. It’s from her doctoral program at Texas Tech University, and it’s an outward reminder, Bennings says, of the accomplishments of her hard work.
Bennings, 46, is the new president of Portland Community College, Oregon’s largest, where she took the reins from Mark Mitsui, who retired in June. She is the first woman to lead the school on a permanent basis and the first Black woman to ever run the college.
