The field for the NCAA baseball tournament is narrowing, but only five of the 16 spots in super regionals were claimed as of Sunday night.
That means Monday shapes up as a busy day of college baseball across the country as 22 teams vie for the 11 remaining spots in super regionals, which are best-of-three, head-to-head matchups set for next weekend.
On Sunday, top-seeded Tennessee joined No. 4 seed Virginia Tech, No. 5 Texas A&M, No. 9 Texas and Notre Dame in winning their respective regional finals to advance.
But other top seeds, including No. 2 Stanford and No. 3 Oregon State, will have to win Monday to avoid an early exit from the tournament.
Regionals are double-elimination, and the seventh game of each regional is played only if necessary — if the undefeated team in the regional final loses. But it has proven necessary in nine of the regionals this year. Two other regionals are behind schedule because of weather delays.
