COLLEGE FOOTBALL, USA — There have been 24 victories in the eight-year history of the College Football Playoff. Here are the seven head coaches who have won those games:
Nick Saban, Alabama: 9 wins
Dabo Swinney, Clemson: 6 wins
Kirby Smart, Georgia: 3 wins
Urban Meyer, Ohio State: 2 wins
Ed Orgeron, Ohio State: 2 wins
Ryan Day, Ohio State: 1 win
Mark Helfrich, Oregon: 1 win
That’s 38 percent of the total playoff wins by Saban, and 63 percent of the playoff wins by the Saban-Swinney combo. Nobody has to tell a college football fan that Alabama (three titles, seven appearance in eight years) and Clemson (two titles, six appearances in eight years) have dominated the playoff era.
But is it possible that we undersell Saban and Swinney, when they account for basically two-thirds of the success in the playoff era, and the other 128 teams in major college football account for the other third?
On the latest bonus episode of The College Football Survivor Show, Doug Lesmerises and Shehan Jeyarajah put those two coaches in context while picking two other head coaches to join them on the Mount Rushmore of head coaches in the playoff era.
Doug and Shehan have previously done the same with quarterbacks, receivers, running backs, defensive linemen, linebackers, defensive backs and assistant coaches. Now, time for the bosses. And in a few weeks, Doug and Shehan will do a final overall Mount Rushmore for the top four people to represent college football in the playoff era.
But for this pod, it’s Saban, Swinney and who else? This episode is a bonus episode is available to those who subscribe on Apple Podcasts for $2.99 per month. With four bonus episodes per month, that’s a pretty good deal.
There’s also an episode every week available on every podcast platform to all.
