Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers have agreed to contract extension that will make him the NFL’s highest-paid player, according to multiple reports.
The quarterback and the Chargers have agreed to a five-year, $262.5 million contract extension. The deal is slightly more than the five-year, $260 million deal Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback Lamar Jackson signed in April and the five-year, $255 million deal for Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts.
The deal includes up to $218.7 million in guaranteed money. Herbert will reportedly receive $100 million in the first year of the extension. Jackson received $185 million guaranteed and Hurts got $179 million guaranteed.
Herbert average annual salary will be $52.5 million, which would make him the league’s highest-paid player. Jackson, the previous highest-paid player, has an average annual salary is $52 million.
The time spent as the league’s highest-paid player has been brief this year and Herbert may not be an exception. Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow is next up to receive a big contract extension and he’s expected to reset the market with his deal.
