Day 6 of the World Athletics Championship ended in historic fashion, thanks to Kazakhstan’s Norah Jeruto.
Jeruto won the gold medal in the women’s steeplechase final at Hayward Field in 8 minutes, 53.02 seconds, the third-fastest time in history. She distanced Ethiopia’s Werkuha Getachew (8:54.61) and Mekidas Abebe (8:56.08) for silver and bronze coming off the last water jump in the race.
Jeruto could only sit and watch the 3,000 steeplechase final during the Toyko Olympics. It was a different story in Eugene, where she returned to the track and became the first Kazakh athlete to win a world outdoor track and field title.
For Team USA, Olympic silver medalist Courtney Frerichs came in sixth, while Emma Coburn finished eighth and Courtney Wayment landed at 12th.
