Kenya’s Emmanuel Kipkurui Korir kicked to victory in the men’s 800 meters at the World Athletics Championships on Saturday evening at Hayward Field in Eugene.
Korir pushed his way toward the front with about 150 meters to go and then passed Canada’s Marco Arop on the home straightaway to win in 1 minute, 43.71 seconds. Korir added the world championships gold about a year after winning Olympic gold in Tokyo last year.
Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati also finished strong to take the silver medal in 1:44.14, while Arop faded to third and the bronze in 1:44.28.
Five of the eight finalists hailed from either Kenya or Algeria.
The United State saw all four of its men’s 800 entrants eliminated in the qualifying heats.
