Lakeridge left-handed pitcher and first baseman Paul Wilson was the second Oregon high schooler to hear his name called in the 2023 MLB draft, being selected by the Detroit Tigers on Monday morning in the third round, 76th overall.
Wilson has been a force for the Pacers, who went a combined 46-12 over the past two seasons. Last spring, Lakeridge was the No. 1 seed going into the state tournament.
The 6-foot-4 Wilson has a fastball that swings into the mid-90s and was the 2021-22 Oregon baseball Gatorade Player of the Year.
Baseball runs in the family for Wilson. His father, Trevor, is a former left-handed pitcher for the Oregon State Beavers and later the Giants and the Angels. On June 7, 1992, Trevor Wilson pitched an immaculate inning, only the 27th of its kind, against the Houston Astros.
Jesuit’s Noble Meyer was the first Oregon prep star to be drafted in this week’s MLB draft, going 10th overall to the Miami Marlins.
