Detectives are searching for a man who tried to kidnap a jogger at gunpoint early Thursday in Southeast Portland, police said Friday.
Officers responded about 4:30 a.m. to a report of an attempted kidnapping at Southeast 70th Avenue and Woodward Street, where they found a 42-year-old woman hiding behind a bush, police said.
The woman told police she was jogging in the South Tabor neighborhood when a man driving a light green Subaru Outback asked her for directions. The man spoke quietly, possibly to draw her closer, the woman told police. He then pulled out a handgun and demanded she get in the car, police said.
The woman ran away and the suspect drove off, police said.
Officers searched the area but did not find the man, police said.
The woman gave a general description of the man as in his 30s or 40s with a close-trimmed beard and who may be wearing glasses.
Police said the man may have been circling nearby blocks in the Subaru before approaching the woman. They asked anyone in the area with surveillance cameras to review footage from that morning and contact crimetips@portlandoregon.gov.
