Baseball is back. Thursday’s MLB opening day ushered in the 2023 season with the new pitch clocks and larger bases, but also with the typical strikeouts, home runs and plays at the plate.
Eight of the 15 road teams picked up wins Thursday, while the Cubs, Yankees, Rays and Twins notched shutouts. The Rangers scored the most runs with 11, while the Orioles and Blue Jays put up 10 each.
There were some big individual performances. Yankees ace Gerrit Cole struck out 11 Giants hitters. His counterpart, San Francisco starter Logan Webb, fanned 12, but it was Cole who got the victory. Orioles catcher and former Oregon State star Adley Rutschman went 5 for 5 at the plate and drove in four runs. Toronto’s George Springer also had five hits.
