Nine people were wounded in a mass shooting early Tuesday morning in Denver near Ball Arena, where basketball fans were celebrating the Denver Nuggets winning the NBA title, according to police.
The shooting happened after the Nuggets had defeated the Miami Heat Monday night in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to capture their first NBA title in franchise history. The shooting occurred about three hours after the game ended and took place on Market Street, about a mile from the arena.
A suspect was arrested and taken into custody, according to police.
“As far as what led up to this altercation that resulted in the shots being fired, that’s still under investigation at this time,” Denver police spokesperson Doug Schepman said in a statement. “It did occur in the area where we had largest gathering of folks celebrating during the night.”
Three of the nine victims were in critical condition, while the others sustained non-life threatening injuries. The suspect was also shot and sustained non-life threatening injuries.
Thousands had gathered in various locations to celebrate the Nuggets’ win, a common occurrence when a team wins a title. Schepman said the crowd had diminished significantly by the time the time the shooting occurred.
