Leo Uelmen’s first Friday start in Pac-12 play was brief.
The Oregon freshman allowed six runs on six hits, two walks and two hit batters in 2.1 innings in a 7-2 loss to USC Friday night at Dedeaux Field.
The Trojans (26-19-1, 12-10) pounced on Uelmen in the second and third innings, scoring three runs in each frame.
No. 9 hitter Ryan Jackson hit a two-run double and Austin Overn added a sacrifice fly in the second, which ended with Rikuu Nishida throwing out a runner at home.
Ethan Hedges hit a two-run double in the third to end the day for Uelmen, who entered the night with a 10.42 ERA in conference play.
USC got a stellar start from Blake Sodersten, who allowed a run on six hits, a walk and two hit batters and struck out 11 over 7.0 innings in the win.
Hedges added an RBI single in the sixth that made it 7-0.
Nishida and Drew Cowley hit solo home runs in the seventh and eighth, respectively, for No. 17 Oregon (30-15, 13-9 Pac-12).
The teams will continue the series at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
