Oakland A’s broadcaster Glen Kuiper was fired Monday after he used a racial slur during an on-air broadcast, NBA Sports California announced.
Kuiper, 60, was suspended indefinitely the day after a pre-game broadcast before the A’s faced the Kansas City Royals on May 5. Kuiper was discussing a visit to the Negro Leagues Museum in Kansas City with broadcast partner and former A’s pitcher Dallas Braden. Kuiper referenced their trip to the museum and uttered a racial slur in place of the museum’s name.
Kuiper later apologized during the sixth inning of the game.
“A little bit earlier in the show, I said something that didn’t come out quite the way I wanted it to,” Kuiper said during the game. “I just wanted to apologize if it sounded different than I meant it to be said. … I just wanted to apologize for that.”
Kuiper, who had worked on A’s broadcasts since 2004, was in his 17th season covering A’s games for NBC Sports. Kuiper is the younger brother of former MLB player and San Francisco Giants announcer Duane Kuiper.
