Fire crews discovered a body at a Lloyd District duplex in the aftermath of a Thursday night blaze that severely damaged the building.
The deceased person was not killed by the fire, fire officials reported.
Firefighters arrived on the scene in the 600 block of Northeast Halsey Street shortly after 11 p.m. to find both floors of the 2-story building in flames. The fire had destroyed the back stairs, causing the firefighters to use ladders to reach the second floor, Portland Fire & Rescue said. The firefighters fought the fire while searching for a resident who was believed to be inside the building.
Fire officials reported that the missing resident had escaped the building unharmed.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze shortly after midnight, and soon thereafter crews found the body in one of the apartments.
Portland police are investigating the death, and the cause of the fire is also under investigation.
