Already the state’s best-ever long jumper, and one of its best sprinters, Oregon City’s Sophia Beckmon was able to push herself even further on Saturday at the GearUp Eason Invitational in Snohomish, Washington.
Beckmon beat her own state record in the long jump at the event. Last year, her best jump was 20 feet, eight inches at the Nike Outdoor Nationals. On Saturday, Beckmon jumped 21-4.25 to set a new state best distance.
Her previous best this season was 20-2.5 at the Central Catholic vs. Oregon City icebreaker meet on March 22.
Beckmon also made a big statement in the sprints. She finished first in the 100-meter dash in 11.35 seconds and was first in the 200-meter dash in 23.47 seconds. Both of those are personal bests, and puts her in third all-time in Oregon behind Lake Oswego’s Mia Brahe-Pedersen and Churchill’s Margaret Johnson-Bailes in both events.
Beckmon is a two-time state champion in the long jump and a two-time national champion in the event as well.
