Oregon State couldn’t maintain momentum from a nice start Friday as the Beavers are 22nd of 30 teams after one round of the NCAA women’s golf championship in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The Beavers shot a 9-over 297 at par-72, 6,368-yard Grayhawk Golf Club, as much of the damage to their score came on their second nine. Oregon State is making its first national championship appearance since 1998.
Playing the back nine first, Oregon State made the turn at 1-under par and flirted with teams in the top five. But the Beavers quickly faded on their second nine, as they were overwhelmed by bogeys and double bogeys.
Junior Chayse Gomez led the way with a 1-under 71. Gomez was the one OSU player who succeeded on the final nine, as she finished with a 2-under 34. Gomez is tied for 21st of 156 players.
Danique Stokmans had the next lowest score at 2-over 74. Stokmans made four birdies, but carded a double bogey 7 at the par-5 fourth.
Rounding out OSU’s scores were Madde Sund at 75, Amanda Minni at 77 and Kyra Ly at 78.
Wake Forest leads after the first round with a 9-under 279. The best Pac-12 placing is Stanford, tied for seventh at even par 288.
Oregon State has afternoon tee times for the second round. Play runs through Sunday, when the 30-team field is pared to 15 for the final round. The top eight teams after 72 holes advance to match play. OSU is currently five strokes out of the top 15.
