We all know the feeling too well: you’ve woken up in the wee hours of the morning to catch a flight, arrived hours early to check in and just barely gotten through the mile-long security line when you get an alert: your flight has been delayed.
Left to waste away in plastic airport seating, hunting for an outlet and spending money on overpriced junk food, your travel day has taken a big hit.
But at the Portland International Airport, you can breathe a sigh of relief because PDX is the best airport in the United States for on-time departures according to a ranking compiled by Innerbody.com.
The Port of Portland could not confirm the ranking was accurate. However, the data, taken from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Air Travel Consumer Reports, found that 84% of flights from October 2021 to October 2022 departed on time from PDX.

The study examined causes for delays, finding the most common reasons to be air carrier delay (34%) and late-arriving aircraft (30.1%). Luckily for PDX, long-standing construction was not listed as a reason for delay.
Despite this seemingly endless construction, PDX is no stranger to high accolades and mass appeal. It has been the best domestic airport by Travel + Leisure, eight times in the past decade, tragically ranked #2 last year.
However, once construction finishes in mid-2024, alongside a slew of local dining options, it will be difficult to imagine that even the slight possibility of a delayed flight would cause any distress for weary travelers.
