Through its community initiative Stand Together, the Portland Timbers and Thorns organization — in partnership with the nonprofit Operation Pitch Invasion — will help build two futsal courts in the Hood River School District in 2024, the club announced Thursday.
The partnership begins with a movie screening. The Hollywood Theatre in Portland will screen the 2021 documentary “Hood River,” which examines the impact soccer has on the culturally diverse youth in the Oregon community. That screening will feature a Q&A with the film’s directors and a raffle of Timbers and Thorns gear.
PTFC started its partnership with OPI in 2015, founding the Fields For All initiative to build high-quality soccer fields and futsal courts in areas around the state classified as “recreation deserts.” Its six project beneficiaries so far include King School and Cesar Chavez School in Portland; Vance Park and the CareOregon Boys and Girls Club in Rockwood and Gresham; Tom McCall School in Forest Grove; and Woodburn High School in Woodburn.
The film screening is scheduled for 3 p.m. April 23 at the Hollywood Theatre in Portland. Tickets, available for purchase here, are $15 with 100% of ticket sales and raffle proceeds going toward the futsal court projects in Hood River.
