Portland broke the high temperature record for May 12 yesterday when we hit 90 degrees. The previous high for the day was 87 degrees in 1973. Another record will fall today if we hit our forecasted high temperature of 95 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The current record for May 13 was also set in 1973, when it was 92 degrees at the airport.
Sunday, Mother’s Day if you’ve forgotten, could break two records in one. The hottest Portland Mother’s Day, set in 1973, naturally, at 92, and the hottest May 14, set in 2014 at 91. The Portland forecast for Sunday is 94.
The first half of the workweek is expected to be slightly cooler with highs in the upper 80s.
This early in the year, Portland’s outdoor city pools and splash pads aren’t yet open. Multnomah County also may not open cooling centers unless temperatures reach 95 degrees for two or more consecutive days or 90 degrees for 5 consecutive days.
But there are several fountains where you can cool off in Portland and open splash pads in the surrounding cities. Also, public libraries are open and have air conditioning. If you need help with the heat, or see someone who needs assistance, call 2-1-1. In case of an emergency, always call 9-1-1.
