I would like the City of Portland, particularly Commissioners Carmen Rubio and Mingus Mapps to please explain to me how not renewing the city’s contract with Friends of Trees benefits the citizens of Portland and the environment. (“With Portland’s canopy dwindling, city ends street tree-planting contract with Friends of Trees,” June 29)
How does ditching an efficient program – one with established neighborhood ties and community engagement; one that teaches youth leadership skills; one that works successfully to better protect our environment during climate crisis – make any sense? How does reinventing the wheel facilitate re-foresting our city as the tree canopy rapidly diminishes? Explain that. To me and your constituents. Because as an adult, all I see is a sloppy attempt to build a bureaucratic mess.
