A 53-year-old Portland man died of unspecified causes Thursday while in the custody of Multnomah County Inverness Jail on a United States Marshals Service hold, officials with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
Kashi Abram Harmon was found unresponsive in the shower area of the jail around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said. Deputies and medical staff at the jail made life-saving efforts before Harmon was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
Court records show Harmon had multiple convictions for sex abuse, burglary and drug possession dating back to 1993.
A federal grand jury indicted him in February for being a felon in possession of a firearm, and Harmon was awaiting trial in jail because prosecutors deemed him a danger to the community. Harmon entered Inverness on June 15, police said.
Harmon’s cause of death will be determined by the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office, and the sheriff’s office also said it is conducting an investigation.
A 58-year-old man awaiting trial for burglary died at the Multnomah County Detention Center on June 16. A 26-year-old man died at Inverness on May 2.
