The Story Behind The Rum Running Gentleman
For those who love the holidays but don’t love the season’s colder temperatures, the Rum Running Gentleman is the cocktail for you. Developed by Ismael Ponce of New York City’s The Up & Up, this concoction takes cues from the Caribbean Old Fashioned (versus its namesake Rum Runner).
Two different types of rum, El Dorado 12 Years and Smith & Cross, come together with Lustau Amontillado — an aged sherry with notes of hazelnut — cloves, fig preserves, and Amaro Nonino for a touch of sweetness, all of which is balanced out by a couple dashes of Angostura. A few spritzes of Ardbeg — widely recognized as one of the smokiest peated Scotch whiskies on the market — adds a subtle smokiness to the final product.
