In 1974, at age 18, Yvonne Pepin-Wakefield left St. Paul, Minnesota, in her AMC Gremlin packed with camping gear and drove west to Oregon.
Her father died when she was 9; her mother when she was 14. When she legally became an adult and left foster care, she was able to access some of the money left for her in trust.
