Oregon State’s 13-game winning streak over Washington and a chance to sweep its first Pac-12 baseball series ended Sunday when the Huskies rolled to a 7-2 win in Seattle.
The top six hitters in Washington lineups produced 11 hits and Husky pitchers Jared Engman and Josh Emanuels combined to pitch a five-hitter.
Despite the loss, Oregon State (18-10, 5-7) won its second consecutive conference series of the season. The Beavers swept a doubleheader Saturday against UW, after a Friday night rainout. OSU has won nine consecutive series against Washington.
Travis Bazzana was the Beavers’ offensive standout, as he hit a solo homer in the third inning. It was OSU’s only extra base hit of the game.
Oregon State starting pitcher A.J. Lattery lasted only three innings, giving up four hits and a run. Jacob Krieg (0-1) absorbed the loss, as he gave up the go-ahead runs in the fourth inning.
Oregon State tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning when Easton Talt scored on a wild pitch. In the top of the third, the Beavers grabbed their only lead of the game on Bazzana’s homer to right field, his third of the season.
Washington scored two runs each in the fourth and sixth innings, then single runs in the seventh and eighth to pull away.
Oregon State’s defense came apart in the fourth, allowing the Huskies to take a 3-2 on lead on a pair of unearned runs. A leadoff homer by A.J. Guerrero was the big blow of the sixth inning. A sacrifice fly and a wild pitch led to runs in the seventh and eighth.
Oregon State used six pitchers Sunday. The only Beaver pitcher who didn’t give up a run was A.J. Hutcheson, who gave up one hit during a one-inning stint.
Engman (2-1) and Emanuels combined to strike out nine Beavers.
Oregon State returns to action Thursday when the Beavers open a three-game series at Oregon. Because of Easter Sunday, the series is played Thursday-Saturday.
