Diar DeRozan, daughter of Chicago Bulls star guard DeMar DeRozan, became a social media star during the Bulls’ 109-105 win over Toronto Raptors in their NBA play-in game Wednesday night.
Diar DeRozan belted out an audible high-pitched scream every time a Raptors’ player attempted a free throw.
Her strategy appeared to work. The Raptors, who made 78.4% of their free throws during the regular season, made just 50% (18-of-36) during the game. The Raptors’ 18 missed free throws were a season-high as their season came to an end.
The nine-year-old DeRozan, sitting behind one of the baskets in the second row, made sure her screams resonated throughout the arena. Her dad said he heard the screams, but didn’t realize it was Diar.
“I kept hearing something during the game – somebody missed (a free throw),” DeMar DeRozan told reporters after the game. “I look back and said, ‘Damn, that’s my daughter screaming?’ “
Diar DeRozan was fortunate to attend the game. DeMar said he was reluctant to allow her to come because she is in school.
“She kept asking … I just said alright, you can miss one day of school and come to a game,” DeRozan told reporters after the game. “I’m glad I did.”
The win extended the Bulls season for at least one more game. They will face the Miami Heat in an elimination game Friday with the winner securing the eighth and final playoff spot. The loser goes home.
Don’t expect to hear Diar DeRozan’s screams during the game on Friday.
Her dad said she will not attend the game in Miami. DeMar said Diar will be back in school.
