Floyd Mayweather, who hadn’t fought in a professional boxing match since 2017, stepped back into the ring Sunday night. Mayweather took on MMA fighter and fledgling boxer John Gotti III in an exhibition bout and he probably wished he stayed out of the ring.
The fighters trash-talked and clenched each other more often than landing punches, and referee Kenny Bayless had had enough after the sixth round. Bayless stopped the fight after the round, but Gotti wasn’t happy. He ran around Bayless and continued throwing punches toward Mayweather.
That’s when members of each fighter’s teams rushed into the ring. There was lots of pushing and shoving as chaos ensued.
Mayweather appeared to stun Gotti with a right hook during the extra fighting before the two were separated.
There were fights outside the ring, according to reports. Gotti was disqualified for excessive grabbing and holding. Gotti remained salty after the bout, calling Mayweather an “enemy for life” on social media.
Mayweather, 46, hasn’t fought professionally since he defeated Conor McGregor in 2017. He officially retired from professional boxing with a 50-0 record, but he has been competing in big-money exhibition bouts since his retirement.
Gotti, 30, is 2-0 as a professional boxer and 5-1 in MMA bouts. Gotti is the grandson of infamous former New York mob boss John Gotti.
