The days are getting longer and the cherry blossoms are on their way. But when, exactly, will Portland transform into a pink-and-white magical wonderland?
That depends on where you are, but for some places, the time is almost upon us.
“The cherry blossoms at the Waterfront are just now starting to open up,” Daniel Misner, lead horticulturist for Portland Parks and Recreation.
“We should have a minor showing on the trees by the end of this week with peak times beginning mid to late week next week and going into the week of the 27th,” Misner added. “I have seen several cherries starting to bloom around town right now and we should see a profusion of blooms over the next several week (as long as the recent snow/ice haven’t damaged the buds).”

The good news is that once those blossoms are on the downswing, the blossoms at the Portland Japanese Garden in Washington Park will just be taking off.
”While every year is different, our Flat Garden’s weeping cherry tends to bloom toward the end of March/early April and the Yoshino cherry trees in our Strolling Pond Garden and aside the Umami Café will follow shortly after,” said Will Lerner, spokesperson for the Portland Japanese Garden.
“This year might see a bit of a delay because of the snow and cold weather in late February,” Lerner added. “I was up in the garden this morning and it looked pretty much the same as last week.”
To know exactly when you can see the blossoms at the Japanese Garden, keep an eye on the garden’s “2023 Cherry Blossom Watch” page.
In the meantime, bask in the glory of last year’s blossoms and start picking your outfit for the perfect Portland springtime photoshoot.
