For our latest wine panel, we asked panelists to taste and grade sparkling wines. These bubblies could be any style within the category, from anywhere in the world.
As always, these selections include brief tasting notes, a rating and the wine’s retail price (which can vary from store to store and market to market). Unless noted otherwise, prices reflect a 750-ml. bottle. If you are a beverage professional with a specialty in wine who is interested in participating in the panel, please contact Editor Kyle Swartz at 763-383-4447, or email him at kswartz@epgacceleration.com.

(97) Gusbourne Brut Rosé (England)
Yes, you read that correctly, England. Southern England shares much of the same characteristics as the Champagne region of France. This combination of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier creates a wine with a profile similar to some Champagne houses’ top offering, at a much more attractive price. Elegant berry, cherry and tree fruit notes abound on the nose and palate. Lovely mouthfeel and the long finish add to the wine’s appeal. ($79.99)
(96) Sea Smoke Sea Spray Blanc de Noir 2014 (CA)
100% pinot noir, which was hand-harvested early from select lots of the biodynamically farmed estate vineyards. Vinified in the traditional methode champenoise method, with a regimented sur lie and bottle aging program. Light touches of color, beautiful minerality and subtle yeast notes reflect an elegant wine with balanced acidity. A wonderful excuse to treat yourself to the best for any occasion! ($99.99)
(96) Champagne Georges Cartier Brut Tradition NV (France)
Using a large percentage of red grape varieties, this Champagne offers plenty of richness and weight on the palate. The chardonnay contributes energy, and hints of white fruit. An outstanding example of Champagne, from a house you may not know so well. Here’s the chance to know them better. ($61.50)

(94) McPherson Sparkling Brut NV (TX)
“Brothers blend” is how I refer to this collaborative project between Kim and Jon McPherson. 100% chenin from the Lepard vineyard is vinified by Kim in Lubbock, TX, and then shipped to his brother in Temecula, CA, for finishing as a sparkling using the Charmat process. Reminiscent of a classic sparkling Vouvray, with crisp acidity, wonderful citrus notes and a touch of sweetness on the finish. Perfect for those hot summer days on the patio. Great value, and 100% Texas to boot! ($21.99)
