A sheriff’s office river patrol unit recovered the body near the western end of Hayden Island.
The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office River Patrol on Monday recovered the body of a swimmer presumed to have drowned June 26 in the Columbia River.
The body of 35-year-old Kevin McDowell was found at the western end of Hayden Island around 7 p.m., according to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.
The river patrol launched its search last Sunday after witnesses reported McDowell jumped from a boat to help a woman who was struggling to swim near the west end of Lemon Island. The woman survived. McDowell did not resurface.
McDowell was not wearing a life jacket, the sheriff’s office said. It was the first drowning in Multnomah County waterways this year.
